Philadelphia Area Red Cross Says It Is Ready For Irene's Potential Onslaught
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The local chapter of the Red Cross says it's ready in the event that Hurricane Irene hits our area this weekend.
The local Red Cross just conducted a massive east coast hurricane preparedness exercise in June, so local CEO Renee Cardwell Hughes says they're ready.
Volunteers are being placed on high alert in case they are needed.
Hughes says it's important that families and individuals take this storm seriously and should already be updating their disaster plans.
She suggests that residents in threatened areas -- especially those who may face evacuation -- have three days' worth of food, water, blankets, sanitary and personal items, and communications.
"It is critical that people text and not try use their cell phones. Cell phones may not operate, depending on the volume of use, but texting will go through," she advises.
