Philadelphia-Area Red Cross Getting Big Donations For Japan Disaster Relief
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Southeastern Pennsylvania chapter of the Red Cross says it is getting some big donations for the Japanese relief effort.
The emphasis here is on fundraising, says Red Cross spokesman Dave Schrader.
"Just in the last three days we've had two very generous corporate donations -- one from QVC and one from Philadelphia Insurance Companies, each for $100,000," he told KYW Newsradio on Tuesday.
Schrader says the American Red Cross is hoping to raise more money to send to the Japanese Red Cross, which is handling developments on the ground -- something that he believes must be an unbelievably difficult challenge.
"Just think if an entire section of Northeast Philadelphia had no power or enough water or food for five days. That's in essence is what's going in Northeast Japan right now," he notes.
That's in addition to the ominous nuclear threat.
