Philadelphia Antiques Show Begins This Week

By Cherri Gregg

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Philadelphia Antiques Show returns this week for the 53rd year in a row.

The Philadelphia Antiques Show: Antiques and Art through the 20th Century presents a range of fine and decorative arts including paintings, prints and maps, dating from colonial times through the mid-20th century.

"You have some of the best antiques dealers in the country coming to show antiques in their area of expertise." says Jennifer Boles, who will be speaking at the show which kicks off on Friday with a preview party, followed by four days of access to 50 exhibitors, as well as historical examples of 18th and 19th century furniture, ceramics, glass, silver, costumes and much more.

"It's really a wonderful opportunity not just for the serious antiques collector, but also for people who are just starting to develop an interest," says Boles.  "It's  a wonderful way to train your eye."

And Boles says antiques can be used in new fun ways that add a little tradition to a modern look:

"Sometimes there is a misconception that antiques are old-fashioned," says Boles.   "What we are starting to see is a lot of younger people using antiques again in their home. They are mixing antiques with more modern piece. For example, using a sleek modern sofa or chair and then placing an antique side table next to it."
