Philadelphia Police Searching For Suspect After 2 Children Abducted During Strawberry Mansion Car Theft
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The manhunt is on for a carjacker who stole a vehicle with two children inside in Philadelphia's Strawberry Mansion section. They are safe after a frantic search Saturday night.
It was a terrifying situation for a mother whose two children were abducted in the blink of an eye, including little 1-year-old baby Miles McKeown.
The abduction happened just after 7 p.m. Saturday night when officials say that mom was dropping off groceries to her family. She left the keys inside and her four-door blue Mitsubishi Mirage running with her 4-year-old and McKeown in the back seat as she temporarily parked along the 2400 block of North 33rd Street.
While the car was parked, officials say someone jumped into the driver's seat and took off with the two kids in the car. The 4-year-old was dropped off a few blocks away at 33rd and Huntingdon, but McKeown was still missing, prompting Pennsylvania State Police to issue an amber alert.
More than two hours after the car was taken, the vehicle and baby were found four blocks from where the whole ordeal began along the 2800 block of Huntingdon Street when an ambulance driver spotted the Blue Mitsubishi.
"He said to his partner, 'I think that might be the car,'" Inspector D.F. Pace said. "The car was on, the heat was on, there was no one in the car. They get out of their medic unit, their ambulance, go over to check and the child was asleep in the car."
"We are very much relieved, very much for the happy ending, just want to get him home," the father of two boys said.
At this time, no arrests have been made.
Police say the potential suspect was wearing a long black coat, black pants, and black sneakers. Officials tell Eyewitness News that police are trying to get fingerprints off the Blue Mitsubishi, but they are also asking for the public's help in the case.
