Philadelphia Activists Call For An End To Racist Violence

By Mike Dougherty

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Outrage, anger and disbelief are some of the emotions still being felt across the country after the massacre in Charleston. Activists in Philadelphia announced plans for a march against racist violence next month.

Lawrence Hamm is organizing the July 25th Million People's March in Newark, New Jersey. He says it's all about unity.

"Black, red, yellow, white, join together in unity to fight racism because there is a pandemic of racist violence and police brutality in America."

Hamm and his supporters are calling for an end to the violence before the country is embroiled in a full-blown race war.

"This is so important to me because people are being killed in cold blood across this country." said Hamm. "And they're being killed by racists."

Hamm hopes this opens some eyes to a growing problem.

"America has to confront this because if we don't confront this, we'll see more of what happened in Charleston, South Carolina."

He says the anger and outrage from the Charleston massacre needs to be harnessed and used as a positive.

"We want people to join together in unity to fight racism and racist violence and police brutality in America."

The march will begin at noon at the Lincoln Monument in Newark on Saturday July 25th.
