Phila. Union Hosts Blood Drive at PPL Park in Chester

Blood, sweat, and tears were spilled at PPL Park on Saturday, but it wasn't on the soccer pitch.

KYW's Mike Dougherty reports that luxury suites and VIP areas of the Philadelphia Union's brand new stadium were converted into a blood donation center as the Union and American Red Cross joined forces to help restock the region's blood supply.

Anthony Tornetta with the Red Cross says it's difficult to maintain that supply during the summer:

"People plan vacations. We have a lot of holidays, so they're not thinking to donate blood. The other is that the American Red Cross relies heavily on high schools and colleges during the school year."

And for their efforts, fans were treated to a grand tour of the stadium, including a peak at the locker room. They also received Union "blood donor" scarves to wear proudly at the next match.

Taylor Rice is a big Union fan and was happy to do her part:

"I've never done it, so I'm a little nervous but I figured I'd give it a shot."

Taylor was just one of about 500 donors -- officials say each one could potentially save three lives.
