Phila. Teachers To Be Recognized For Inspiring Students
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Amid a black cloud of huge budget cuts, there will no doubt be some positive news for Philadelphia schoolteachers tonight.
"Teachers, first of all, appreciate being valued," says teachers' union president Jerry Jordan.
Fifty nine Philadelphia high school teachers are in line to receive the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Lindback Foundation. In addition to being recognized for motivating and inspiring students, each teacher will get $3,500.
Jordan says much of that money will find its way back to the classroom.
"They use it for a variety of things. But when you talk to most of the teachers, you will find that they will give you an answer that includes doing something for their children."
The awards ceremony begins at 4:30 p.m., at the Prince Music Theater.
