Phila. Children Gather for Chess Match in Center City
Kids from all over Philadelphia gathered to play chess in Center City.
KYW's Hadas Kuznits reports that over 30 chess boards were set up in the Liberty One atrium by ASAP, or After School Activities Partnerships, as part of their "checkmating violence" initiative.
Windsor Jordan is the director of chess programs. He's in charge of the chess in the summer series:
"We have kids from all over the city, from North Philadelphia, from West Philadelphia, very diverse backgrounds, all here to play chess and using chess as a way to teach kids about non-violence."
So who do the kids play against?
"You'll se adults playing kids, girls playing boys."
Kuznits: "A little healthy competition?"
"A little healthy competition, and it's great because the great thing about chess, it's competition but it's also about constructive competition. So not only will you see kids playing but after they finish their game they may go over their game afterwards."
