Phila. Residents Asked To Keep Their Trash For Another Week

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- City officials have promised to maintain most city services outside the area the Pope will visit but one exception is trash collection. There will be no collection Friday or Monday. Residents are being asked to hold on to their trash for another week.
Deputy Streets Commissioner Donald Carlton says trash trucks will be busy for the next several days with everything from clean up to possible security uses, so trash collection is being suspended. It's a message city officials have tried to get out for weeks but Carlton fears it's gotten lost in the deluge of information about the Pope's visit, so he's trying to spread the word that folks with Friday or Monday trash collection should not put it out.
If you can't hold it, Carlton says to take it to one of the five "convenience centers" around the city.
"We know this is unusual circumstances and we understand individuals don't like to hold on to trash and material for an entire week."
He says hours are extended to 8 p.m. through October 4th and they've doubled the limit from 12 bags to 24 bags of trash. You can find a complete list of the centers below:
