Phila. Official Warns of Slippery Scammer Posing As City L&I Inspector
By Mike Dunn
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia officials are warning city residents to watch out for a scam artist who's been knocking on doors, posing as a city building inspector, and demanding cash.
Carlton Williams, commissioner of the city's Department of Licenses & Inspections ("L&I"), says they've received three reports since Monday of a person posing as an L&I inspector and gaining entry to homes:
"He's displayed a badge, and he's using information about the property stating that there are violations, and that the city will take certain actions if conditions aren't met -- usually an exchange of money."
Williams says in two instances the victims got suspicious and refused, but the third victim handed over about $91.
There were no reports of violence in any of the incidents, which took place in North Philadelphia, Northeast Philadelphia, and Northwest Philadelphia.
The suspect is described as a middle-aged African-American male, partially bald, and without glasses.
Williams says if you spot the scam artist, immediately call 911. And he reminds residents that L&I inspectors have photo IDS with their name and will never ask for money.
