Phila. Non-Profit Recognized For Work With Veterans, Stray War-Zone Dogs

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - An area woman who founded an organization reuniting U.S. soldiers with stray war zone dogs they befriended on patrols gets recognition from the defense department.
The Department of Defense's Seven Seals Awards was recently given to Trish Gohl of Northeast Philadelphia for her passionate support for war-torn pups.
Gohl founded No Dog Gets Left Behind in 2010, a non-profit that finds homes for stray dogs overseas with one of the U.S. soldiers they were befriended by.
"We do fundraising for one soldier at a time. Once the funds are raised, which could be anywhere from $3,500 to $4,000, we then work with international rescue groups that actually get the dogs home," said Gohl.
The 12th dog placed is Sammy. In a few weeks a soldier from Lancaster County is due to return home, and waiting for him is his war buddy from Afghanistan. Sammy's job was to bark and alert soldiers when intruders approached.
