Phila. Kids Decorate a Planter Box For White House on Public Gardens Day, Friday
By John McDevitt
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A group of children spent some time today at one of Philadelphia's public gardens, helping to decorate a planter box headed to the White House.
One by one, kids dipped a thumb into green paint and then put their mark on a white planter box which will be given to first lady Michelle Obama for the White House garden.
Eight-year-old Mary-Ruth Schwab put her best thumb forward.
"First I put some green paint on my thumb," she explained. Was she familiar with the expression 'green thumb'?
"It means that you're good with nature."
Her mom, Janene, says the project is a good one.
"My kids are real fans of the First Family," she tells KYW Newsradio, "so the idea that a planter box is going from here -- their favorite public garden, Bartam's Garden -- to Michelle Obama is really exciting to them."
The box was decorated with the little green thumbprints in preparation for National Public Gardens Day, this Friday (see related story).
