PETA Offers Advice On Keeping Pets Safe In The Cold
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Don't leave your pets in the cold.
That's the advice from animal rights group PETA, which sent out an advisory on keeping animals safe when the mercury drops.
According to PETA, pet-owners should keep their animals indoors, particularly if they have short hair such as beagles, pit bulls, Rottweilers and Dobermans. Elderly, small and very young animals should also stay inside during cold weather.
Furthermore, a warm sweater or jacket could also help keep a short-haired dog warm on a walk, and food amounts should be increased since animals burn more calories in the cold.
Owners are also urged to wipe off their cat or dog's legs, feet and stomach after they come in from the snow. Salt and other chemicals used to fight snow can make animals sick if they ingest them.
Additionally, PETA asks that you keep an eye out for stray animals and call your local humane society if you see any animals wandering alone or left outdoors in the elements without shelter.
