Person Fatally Struck By SEPTA Bus In Southwest Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A man was fatally struck by a SEPTA bus in Southwest Philadelphia Monday afternoon.
The accident, which involved a Route 12 bus, happened at 49th Street and Woodland Avenue at about 4 p.m.
John Evans, an eyewitness, says the victim appeared to be in his 60s and was walking by himself toward 50th and Woodland when the accident happened.
"He died holding on to the wheels. He tripped, rolled over and as he rolled over, he rolled under the tire," said Evans.
Police say they were called here, around 4 this afternoon. When they arrived, the victim was underneath the bus, pronounced dead at the scene.
"A few of my investigators are finishing the interview with the driver and obviously a pretty traumatic experience, but we're still collecting information from the driver as well," said Lt. Ray Murphy of the Philadelphia Police.
Investigators tried to block the onlookers from witnessing the gruesome aftermath. But for Sallie Williams the image will stay with her. She only wishes the driver heard her niece yell out to stop.
"My niece was trying to get the bus driver's attention to tell him to stop. We were just looking, but when the bus driver finally realized what was going on, it was too late, it was too late," said Williams.
Police have not released details on the person's identity at this time.
There is no word on the cause of the accident. Authorities are investigating.
