Pennsylvania's High Unemployment Triggers Period Of Extended Benefits
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Tens of thousands of Pennsylvania residents will soon be eligible for an additional several weeks of unemployment benefits.
Sean Yeakle, spokesman for the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, says the state's unemployment rate is above the threshold that triggers the availability of High Unemployment Period Extended Benefits.
"It'll be around 50,000 people and then each week from now to the end of the year, additional people will exhaust their benefits and they may become eligible."
Yeakle says High Unemployment Period Extended Benefits are available to people who've exhausted their regular state unemployment compensation, federal emergency unemployment compensation, and regular Pennsylvania extended benefits.
The first payable week is the week ending November 12th. Under current law, the final week for regular extended benefits and High Unemployment Period Extended Benefits is the week ending December 31st.
