Pennsylvania Voters To Decide Who Replaces Kathleen Kane As Attorney General
NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- In Pennsylvania, voters are choosing the next Attorney General on Tuesday. The two candidates both come out of Montgomery County, and will have a full plate as they'll need to repair the wreckage left behind by former attorney general – and convicted felon – Kathleen Kane.
Republican state Senator John Rafferty is facing Democratic Montgomery County Commissioner's board chairman Josh Shapiro.
Rafferty was elected to his 4th term in the state senate in 2014 where he chairs the Senate Transportation Committee. He points to his time as a private attorney and as a deputy attorney general, from 1988-91, and says his opponent lacks the courtroom experience to be attorney general, and only wants the job to further his political ambition.
Shapiro pledges to serve a full term, and points to his record of working to clean up messes, first as a state rep, then as chair of the third-largest county in the state.
Shapiro says he believes the Office of Attorney General can do much more for the people of Pennsylvania, emphasizing battling opioid addiction, and what he calls commonsense gun laws.
The Attorney General's Office isn't the only scandal-plagued office seeking new leadership: Pennsylvania will also elect a new treasurer, with Democrat Joe Torsella battling Republican Otto Voit. Rob McCord was forced to resign the office last year, before pleading guilty to federal corruption charges.
The Auditor General's Office is also on the ballot: Democrat incumbent Eugene Pasquale is facing Republican John Brown.
