Pennsylvania Turnpike Tolls Going Up -- Again -- on Sunday
By David Madden
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- If you use the Pennsylvania Turnpike, get ready to dig a little deeper to pay the toll, as of Sunday morning.
"The turnpike has actually been increasing tolls annually since about 2007," admits turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebeo. He says that's when the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania started using a portion of turnpike tolls to fund the state department of transportation (Penndot) and its own capital work.
This Sunday, turnpike tolls will go up five percent across the board.
What that means to you depends on how you pay. For the average one-exit trip, if you use EZ Pass you'll pay an extra nickel. But pay cash and it'll be a dime more.
Past toll hikes gave EZ Pass users a break, resulting in an average 35-percent discount for electronic tolls versus cash.
