PennDOT To Close Market Street Near 30th Street Station For Roadwork This Weekend
By Mark Abrams
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - PennDOT plans to close a one-block section of Market Street in the area of 30th Street Station beginning tonight and through the weekend to install a waterproof barrier and resurface the road.
PennDOT's Gene Blaum says motorists will still be able to access Amtrak's 30th Street Station by following detours around the construction site, but they should build in some extra time because crews will be working around-the-clock during the weekend (weather permitting) starting tonight at 8 and continuing until 5 a.m. Monday to finish the job.
Blaum says crews plan to rip up the old road surface and then install sheets of a waterproof material onto the road.
"It's a fabric with a bituminous material on top of it. It's an impervious layer. Basically, it's to prevent water from seeping down or penetrating underneath that onto our structures beneath the street."
Those structures are a series of bridges under Market Street which hold up nearby streets that run over Amtrak's rail lines through the area.
Once the fabric is sealed in place, Blaum says crews will lay down an asphalt coating on top of it.
Construction crews have been in the area working for months on an extensive project upgrading and repairing the bridges damaged by rain and melting snow and ice over the years.
Now, Blaum says, it's Market Street's turn. He says the weekend detours will be well marked.
