By John McDevitt

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Secretary was in Philadelphia today with a big check to support the "Philadelphia 30th Street Station District Plan."

"I apologize for being late I was caught in traffic on the Schuylkill Expressway."

PennDOT Secretary Barry Schoch was in from Harrisburg for the announcement of $2.5 million to support transportation, commercial development community opportunities at at around 30th Street Station.

"And we recognize at PennDOT the importance of the Amtrak corridor and the station redevelopment. The stations are places. They are places where they create a draw for people, create an opportunity for economic redevelopment."

The commonwealth now joins other financial backers of "Philadelphia 30th Street Station District Plan," including Brandywine Realty Trust and Drexel University, where John Fry is the president.

"The 30th Street Station District Plan will leverage the nation's third busiest passenger rail station as a driver of economic activity and innovation in Philadelphia. It will integrate commercial opportunities and transit infrastructure planning to create capacity to meet and benefit for the enormous demand for transportation here in the nation."

The project is long term with a 30 year time frame, but before that work begins a master plan has to be developed which is expected to be ready in about two years.
