PennDot Makes Policy Change After Fatal Montco Bus Crash
PennDot has now changed one of its policies in the wake of a deadly bus crash in Montgomery County, Pa. earlier this year, a change designed to make it safer for children who use the big yellow school buses every day.
KYW's Brad Segall reports the state transportation agency has now implemented the change which adds a full accident history to a motorist's driving record. Crashes will be ranked based on whether they were fatal, if there were injuries or just property damage.
State representative Bryan Lentz says that will give bus companies a better picture of a driver they're looking to hire:
"So now when someone goes and looks at a driver record, they will be able to know right up front, has this person ever been involved in an accident which involved serious injury or fatality."
Lentz, along with State Rep Josh Shapiro, pushed for the change after a bus driver was involved in a deadly crash in Lower Frederick. The same driver caused a crash more than a decade ago when he was dialing a cell phone, ran a stop sign, and killed a two-year-old girl.
The bus company didn't have access to those details.
