Penn Vet's Large Animal Hospital Activates 'Foal Cam' Today
By John McDevitt
KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (CBS) - Penn Vet's large-animal hospital, The New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, activates it's "Foal Cam" today. You'll be able to log on and monitor a pregnant mare who was artificially inseminated and witness the birth of a special foal.
The pregnant mare you'll see on the FOAL CAM is named "My Special Girl" or MSG. She's a surrogate horse. The pregnancy she's carrying was conceived by a method called intracytoplasmic sperm injection, similar to the technique to help women get pregnant.
It's the first successful horse pregnancy by Penn Vet using the advanced reproductive technique.
Dr. Regina Turner is an Associate Professor of Large Animal Reproduction at The New Bolton Center.
"And this technique is extremely useful for creating offspring from very sub-fertile stallions and also from mares that have problems if they have infections in their uterus or blockages in the oviduct."
The foal is due in mid march. It's gender is being kept under wraps. There will be a naming contest when its born.
