Penn State's Board Considers Tuition Increase
UNIONTOWN, Pa. (AP) — Students from Pennsylvania who attend Penn State's main campus may be in for a 3.4 percent tuition increase, the university said Thursday as trustees met in the state's southwestern corner.
The university said the additional cost would be about $264 per semester for freshmen and sophomores, the Centre Daily Times reported. The board of trustees was expected to vote on the proposed rates on Friday.
School officials said higher tuition is needed to pay the cost of academic programs.
"We remain committed to keeping Penn State's tuition increase at its lowest possible rate without sacrificing the quality of our academic programs," president Rodney Erickson told the paper.
Proposed tuition increases for branch campuses are lower. At the Altoona campus, for example, the rate would be 2.45 percent, or a $160 increase.
The university is also considering fee increases for technology, activities and facilities.
