Penn Staters For Responsible Stewardship: Gov. Corbett Put More Kids At Risk With Handling Of Sandusky Investigation

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Dom Giordano talked with Maribeth Schmidt from Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT about the group's opposition to Governor Tom Corbett for his handling of the investigation of Jerry Sandusky and subsequent treatment of longtime Penn State Head Football Coach Joe Paterno.

Schmidt contends that Corbett was derelict in investigating Sandusky and that more children were put at risk as a result.

"The power of the Penn State vote was obvious and I have to say, my easiest job that I've ever had was getting Penn Staters out to vote against Corbett. Every voter should've voted against him for the way he slowed played the Sandusky investigation and left children in harm's way for greater than three years."

She believes Corbett's action in regard to Sandusky should've precluded him from ever running for Governor in the first place.

"The paperwork landed on his desk, as Attorney General, three years before he acted upon it. When he chose to act on it, in the throes of setting up his gubernatorial bid, he actually assigned drug enforcement agents to look into it. That's how not serious he thought the accusation was. I do believe the vote is as much a referendum on Corbett as AG as it is on Corbett as Governor, and shame on the Republican Party for not anticipating that."

Schmidt stated that Penn State voters deserve credit for Corbett's defeat to his Democratic challenger, Tom Wolf.

"There are hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvania Penn State voters and when you look at the AP reports this morning, 40 percent of those polled in the exit polls said that the Penn State issue was something they considered when they voted against Corbett. So, I would say they made an impact."
