Penn State QB Situation Ranked 12th In College Football

By Andrew Porter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- In a recent rankings list by NFL.com, Penn State came in as the 12th best quarterback situation among all FBS programs.

Christian Hackenberg threw for 2,955 yards and 20 touchdowns, starting every game at quarterback as a true freshman at Penn State in 2013, breaking all kinds of passing records. However, the writer---Mike Huguenin---believes there are many variables when evaluating the QB situations around college football, most importantly the comfortably of the coach. For Penn State, James Franklin makes his debut as head coach this season taking over for the now Houston Texans coach, Bill O'Brien.

Other factors that went into the ranking include is the experience of both the starting and backup quarterback. Penn State is very young at the signal caller position, as their backup QB will likely be the talented true freshman, Michael O'Connor.

Of Penn State's QB situation, Huguenin questioned Franklin's ability to grow Hackenberg, writing, "There was no question about Hackenberg's continued growth had O'Brien remained, but there has to be a slight one now: Does the new staff know how to handle him?"

The top five quarterback situations in college football---according to this list---are Florida State, Oregon, Ohio State, Baylor, and East Carolina.
