Penn State President Hopes Sandusky Trial Brings 'Some Closure'
By Tony Romeo
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) - The president of Penn State University says he believes the embattled school will emerge stronger after the Jerry Sandusky trial, scheduled to start with jury selection next week.
Rather than worrying about bombshell revelations or a backlash that may result from the Sandusky trial, Penn State president Rodney Erickson says the proceedings are "long-awaited" by many associated with the school.
"There are many questions that people hope will be answered as part of this, and I think many in the Penn State community and probably well beyond are hoping this will help result in some further closure."
Erickson points to Penn State's efforts to become a leader in the prevention of child abuse, including the allocation of the school's $2-point-6 million dollar share of last year's football bowl revenues for that purpose. And despite all the distractions, he says Penn State has set a record for student applications and new research grant dollars in the current fiscal year.
