Trustees Say McQueary Won't Coach Against Nebraska
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (CBS) - Late last night, Penn State athletics announced assistant coach Mike McQueary will not be in attendance for Saturday's game against Nebraska because of concerns for his safety following multiple threats.
The following is a statement released by Penn State Athletics: "Due to multiple threats made against Assistant Coach Mike McQueary, the University has decided it would be in the best interest of all for Assistant Coach McQueary not to be in attendance at Saturday's Nebraska game."
McQueary's been at the heart of this controversy, as he's been identified as the former graduate assistant who witnessed an alleged incident with former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky and a young boy in the shower.
Also yesterday, after a third straight day of emergency meetings by Penn State's board of trustees, Governor Tom Corbett, who is also on that board, says he supports the board's decision to fire coach Joe Paterno and school president Graham Spanier, saying the actions of the Paterno and Spanier were in his view, disappointing.
"I support the board's decision, their actions caused me to not have confidence in their ability to lead. Next question."
Corbett also says the firing of Paterno had to be done before Saturday's game. Now, the board has caught some flak for the timing of the announcement, coming at 10 p.m., when many students were already at bars. Following the announcement, some took to the streets in anger.
As for students, a much more composed day yesterday, as many of them gathered outside Old Main.
Student body president TJ Bard says they are dealing with a whirlwind of emotions, but he reminded students their actions reflect direct on the school, and he asked them to act accordingly, especially before tomorrow's game.
And in addition to urging all fans to wear blue, there will be fundraising efforts to benefit anti-child abuse foundations.
And Friday night, there will be a candle light vigil here to recognize Sandusky's alleged victims. School officials estimate thousands will attend that vigil.
