Penn State Alumni In Philadelphia Ready To Move Past Sex Scandal
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Sports bars in Philadelphia were filled with Penn State fans - fans who say they are ready to move past the sex scandal.
"We're just trying to prove that we're bigger than the issues going on," said Angela Anderson, a 2006 Penn State graduate.
At Mad River Bar and Grill in Manayunk, Penn State alumni watched their Nittany Lions take on Nebraska with the same excitement and enthusiasm as any other week.
"We are Penn State!" said Ivin Rubin.
"We're a family," said Abby Tolotti.
But the Penn State family is facing challenges with the sex scandal that lead to the arrest of former football coach Jerry Sandusky and the firing of the university's president, Graham Spanier, and head football coach Joe Paterno. Tolotti felt the longtime coach should have been on the sidelines for this game.
The tough week for Penn State seemed like it would end on a winning note. But instead, dozens of alumni at Field House Sports Bar, in Center City, watched in disappointment as the Lions lost to Nebraska 17 to 14.
"It's disheartening," said current Penn State student Paul Phillip.
Brendan Stenson said, today wasn't about winning. "Regardless of what happens, it's time to unite and come out of this a lot stronger."
