Penn State Officials Arraigned On New Charges, Released on Bail

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Two former Penn State University administrators have been arraigned and released on bail after being hit with additional charges in an alleged Jerry Sandusky cover-up.
The former president of the university has also been charged (see related story).
Former athletic director Timothy Curley and former Penn State VP Gary Schultz had previously been charged with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse.
Now, they are also charged with obstruction of justice, conspiracy, and endangering the welfare of children.
After the two men were arraigned before a district justice in suburban Harrisburg this afternoon and released on $50,000 unsecured bail each, Curley's attorney, Caroline Roberto, called the new offenses "repackaged" charges.
"Last year I told you all that the perjury charge was a weak case, and that it would be almost impossible for the prosecution to prove that charge. The prosecution recognized that, and this year, they're asking for a do-over," she said.
Former Penn State president Graham Spanier is to be arraigned next week.
Prosecutors allege the "conspiracy of silence" extended all the way to the top at Penn State, and included decisions not to alert police or child welfare authorities after getting a 2001 report of Sandusky sexually abusing a boy in a team shower.
Attorney general Linda Kelly said at a Capitol news conference yesterday that all three "knowingly testified falsely and failed to provide important information and evidence."
Curley, 58, is the athletic director on leave while he serves out the last year of his contract, and Schultz, 63, has retired as vice president for business and finance.
