Penn Professor Authors Book On Raising Daughters That Were Jocks

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – On Mothers Day, we turn to fathers or at least one father with a new memoir, Daddy's Little Goalie, recalling raising two daughters involved in sports.

Robert Strauss, Penn English professor and freelance writer (and colleague of mine at KYW-TV back in the early 80's) says this is less a book about sports than it is about being a good parent, especially to a pair of girl jocks.

Strauss emphasizes one of the keys is involvement, "Bucking the cliché where you say, I didn't see my kids grow up, well, I saw my kids grow up, and though they had music concerts, that was like three or four times a year, but with sports, it was like 60 times a year."

This isn't a story of great sports success. One daughter did score the only point in a 44-to-1 basketball massacre. But Ella and Sylvia were part of a historic wave of girl athletes, a transformational generation who took to sports just like the guys, leading Moms and Dads into unexplored parenting terrain.

This book is Strauss' map.
