Pedestrian Struck, Killed By Car On The Roosevelt Boulevard
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Philadelphia's most dangerous stretch of highway was the sight of yet another fatal accident early Tuesday morning.
Joshua Hess, 33, died in the darkness at about 5:25 a.m. while trying to cross Roosevelt Boulevard near Welsh Road while on his way to work.
He was rushed to Aria Health's Torresdale Division, but he was pronounced dead about an hour later.
Police say the driver of the car that struck Hess stopped and has not been charged with any violations as the investigation into the accident moves forward.
Hess, investigators say, is the third pedestrian to be struck and killed in the lanes of the Boulevard in the past five weeks. Since January, seven people have died in accidents on the Boulevard, compared to five for all of last year.
In addition to his full-time job at the IRS, Hess worked nights and weekends at Curran's Irish Inn on State Road. Fellow workers say he was, in their words, "a great guy with a big heart," and his tragic death was "like losing a brother."
