PECO To Resume Meter Replacement

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - PECO has decided to resume its meter replacement program after a break caused by concerns that new "smart" meters were overheating.

There were a total of 30 overheating incidents, including two that caused significant damage to homes.

PECO spokeswoman Cathy Engel Menendez says after a thorough investigation by several independent parties, including Underwriters Laboratories, PECO has decided to replace thousands of already installed smart meters made by a company called Sensus with those made by a company called L&G.

"Based on those results, we have found that the L&G meter design that we are using is fully compliant with the UL – Underwriters Laboratories – testing and certification, and we're confident that the L&G meter is the best solution for our customers," Menendez says.

It will take about 45 days to replace the Sensus smart meters and after that PECO will resume swapping out old analog meters with L&G smart meters.
