Pay For Philadelphia Non-Profit CEO's Among Highest In Country
By Pat Loeb
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A new study gives Philadelphia non-profits good grades for fundraising efficiency and accumulating assets but a terrible score for spending on administrative costs and CEO salaries.
Philadelphia non-profits have the highest administrative expenses of any of the 30 major cities studied by the group, Charity Navigator. And that may be because of extraordinarily high compensation for non-profit leaders, the third highest in the study.
While Charity Navigator spokeswoman Sandra Miniutti says six-figure pay is average, "In the studies that we've done, we see that large charities typically pay their CEO's around $130,000."
There are a few stand-outs in Philadelphia. Alison Vulgamore at the Philadelphia Orchestra makes $756,000 a year, according to its 990. And the heads of the Art Museum, Franklin Institute and the public broadcast station WHYY all make more than $400,000.
Penn has by far the highest paid non-profit employee in the city: Its medical school dean makes $2.6 million.
