Pay Atlantic City Expressway Tolls Or Lose Car Registration, NJ Drivers Warned
By David Madden
HAMMONTON, N.J. (CBS) -- The Atlantic City Expressway is ready to join the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway in a unique way to target toll cheaters: go after their vehicle registrations.
The South Jersey Transportation Authority is set to approve the plan next month with the state's Motor Vehicle Commission. SJTA spokesman Kevin Rehmann says there are about 90 people in New Jersey who have racked up bills topping $200 on the expressway.
Once the plan is in place, those names -- license plates, actually -- will go to Trenton.
"You'll get a notice from them with an offer of a hearing within 30 days," says Rehmann, or face revocation of your car's registration.
EZ Pass records will be used to back up the move, which Rehmann says should take two to three months to complete on each alleged toll cheater.
For now, the move is only targeted at New Jersey drivers. They can't go after out-of-state toll cheats without legislation and reciprocity agreements.
