Pavano Coasts, Phillies Fall to Twins 4-1.
Carl Pavano threw a complete game 4-hitter as the Twins beat the Phillies 4-1 to take two out of three in the weekend set. Pavano (8-6) faced little resistance from a Phillies offense that had scored 19 runs over the first two games of this series. Wilson Valdez was the Phillies' unlikely power source, hitting his second home run in as many games in the 5th inning. The Phillies managed just three singles otherwise off Pavano, who needed just 105 pitches to pick up his first complete game of the season. Roy Halladay (8-6) took the loss, allowing 11 hits, four runs (three earned),with no walks and eight strikeouts. Denard Span and Justin Morneau had solo homers for Minnesota. The Phillies fall to 35-32, and now trail the first place Braves by 5-1/2 games. Atlanta beat the Royals 8-5 Sunday to complete the three-game sweep.
