Patriots Accused Of Using Under-Inflated Footballs

By Justin Udo

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The New England Patriots are headed back to the Super Bowl and once again they are covered in controversy.

As KYW's Justin Udo reports, the Patriots are accused of using under-inflated footballs to help them beat the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship game.

So what advantage does a team gain by playing with an under-inflated ball?

"Some say that a softer ball with less air is easier to catch when it's raining so that's the reason that someone would try to take a little air out of the ball," said CBS 3 Sports Director Beasley Reece.

Reece says he's not giving this accusation any validity because it would make the ball a lot harder for the quarterback to throw.

But seeing that the Patriots were caught cheating in the past by videotaping opponents, fans do have the grounds to be skeptical.

"Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have been to six Super Bowls together, this is the sixth one. You know we tend to be aggravated at people who win all the time," said Reece.

Reece says no cheating allegations surprise him because this is a game based on war and espionage.

"It's a war game. Part of war is espionage and spying," he said.
