Patriotic Plantings
By Phran Novelli
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Planting a flag of flowers for Memorial Day weekend gives you a great display for all our patriotic holidays through the summer.
If you fill planters now with summer annuals in red white and blue (or dark purple which is sometimes as close as you can get), they'll still be waving on Flag Day in June, the Fourth of July and into September for Labor Day. Or plant red and white geraniums in a blue pot, white and dark purple petunias in a red pot, or some of the heat-loving blue and red lobelia in a white pot - you'll be all decked out and ready for every holiday barbeque.
And, if you're invited to a friend's house for Memorial Day, here's an easy gift to bring your hosts - a flat of annuals arranged as a flag - red and white vinca as stripes with a pack of blue and white lobelia in the upper left corner for the stars. (And to be a really nice guest, offer to plant them before you depart.)
