Parx Agrees To Pay Big Bucks To Resolve Pollution Allegations
BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) - Parx has agreed to pay a hefty settlement to the state to resolve allegations of pollution related to its racetrack operations.
Deborah Fries, spokeswoman for the Department of Environmental Protection, says Parx has agreed to pay almost $390,000 to settle violations related to manure runoff.
"There's a lot of material that is stored on the track facility and the back stretch, as well as water that comes off the horses during washing. All of which presents material that needs to be contained," Fries said.
Beginning in July 2008, the racetrack's operation was deemed responsible for discharges of manure-laden water which ultimately polluted a tributary of the Neshaminy Creek.
DEP says Parx also filled wetlands, and violated DEP orders and various environmental regulations. The agreement also includes a binding commitment by Parx to build infrastructure to prevent future pollution incidents.
