Partying Begins Along Manayunk Wall Ahead Of Philly Cycling Classic
By John McDevitt
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Philly Cycling Classic takes place on Sunday and a popular spectator spot is along the Manayunk Wall. The celebration has already begun at some houses along the steep hill.
The cow bells were out on Saturday, and at one house, a bunch of guys were on the porch in bathing suits drinking alcohol out of pink plastic flamingos -- or flabongos.
"Usually people like coming to hang out with us around this time of year," one guy said.
And what's the theme for the party?
"The theme is lubing up with oil and wearing our bathing suits," said another guy. "Yeah, to attract the babes."
Jane Lipton with the Manayunk Development Corporation says they have beefed up efforts on liquor control enforcement in recent years, including the ban of cans and bottles along the cycling route and the patrolling of state troopers to curb underage drinking, have sent a message to partygoers.
"Be sensible, be responsible," she says. "That message has really worked, and I think we have gone a long way to bringing this sporting event back to life."
