Parking Ticket Writers To Begin Snapping Plates of Violators in Philadelphia

HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- The Philadelphia Parking Authority will soon begin photographing the license plates of some parking violators.
State lawmakers held a hearing today in Harrisburg on the state-run Parking Authority's operations, and some of them raised the age-old issue of constituents who complain that they get parking tickets in Philadelphia even though they claim they've never been in the city.
In response to those questions, Parking Authority officials revealed that their ticket writers will, in about six months, be equipped with gear that will enable them to photograph license plates of parking violators.
Parking Authority deputy executive director Corinne O'Connor says that while all parking enforcement officers will get the new gear, which plates will be actually photographed will be based on the type of violation.
"We're going to compare ourselves to other large cities and decide what violations we're going to take photographs of -- so it may not be every violation," she told the lawmakers.
But O'Connor says it's likely that more than half of all parking violators in Philadelphia will have their license plates photographed.
