Parking Authority Puts Temporary Hold On Neighborhood Scooter Parking Crackdown

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- After a closed door meeting Friday afternoon with Philadelphia City Councilman Mark Squilla and a representative from Councilman Kenyatta Johnson's office, the Philadelphia Parking Authority will temporarily put a hold on neighborhood Scooter Parking enforcement while a new set of procedures are put in place.
The initial policy left a number of residents upset, unsure what to do after the PPA began a crack down on sidewalk scooter and motorcycle parking last week (see related story). Councilman Squilla says that among the complaints were also quite a few suggestions.
"Fortunately, the Parking Authority had a bunch, too! So a lot of people have been complaining directly to the PPA," Squilla said.
With those suggestions, PPA officials decided that they will spend the next week developing Residential Parking Permits for Scooters, which will set parking guidelines for residential areas. The PPA is expected to begin taking applications for the permits in early November with the goal of having them issued by early December.
Scooters will still be prohibited from parking on sidewalks on any commercial block, including Center City.
