Parents To Decide If Two Under-Performing Schools Will Be Turned Over To Charter Operators
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Two more struggling Philadelphia schools may be turned over to charter operators -- if parents at those schools agree.
The school district has a new way of converting underperforming schools under its Renaissance program. Parents will decide whether two elementary schools -- Munoz Marin and Edward Steel -- should become Renaissance Charters or remain district-run.
Deputy Superintendent Paul Kihn says School Advisory Councils will vote, but there will also be an election-style vote May 1st.
"Parents wil have the opportunity to come between 7 am and 7 pm and effectively cast a ballot as to what their preference is for the operation of their school next year."
The district has chosen ASPIRA to run Munoz-Marin and Mastery to operate the Steel school next year, should parents agree.
