Parents, Students Get A Lesson In Bus Safety

By Dan Wing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Over the next few weeks, thousands of students throughout the Delaware Valley will be boarding a school bus for the very first time. So officials with the School District of Cheltenham Township hosted a school bus safety event Monday night at Glenside Elementary School to give kids and parent a run down on how to safely ride the bus.

Dozens of kids and their parents first crowded the cafeteria for a film showing some basic safety tips for kids to remember. Then they were taken outside to actually board a school bus for the first time. So what are some safety tips?

"Make sure all of them have seatbelts."

"No food."

Safety experts on hand from First Student Bus Company say children should also take two steps back when the bus approaches, and make sure to leave 10-feet of space when walking in front of a stopped bus. But even with a wealth of safety tips some kids, like Parker, would still like to have Mom come for the ride.

Parker: "How come you said you're coming with me on the bus, but you didn't come?"

Mom: "Because I knew you could do it all by yourself."

Parker: "No. Next time you're coming with me."
