New Parent Resource Center Opens In North Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- There's a new community hub for parents in North Philadelphia to get involved with their community.
The ribbon is cut on a new parent resource center at Peirce Elementary School in North Philadelphia. A former pre-K room is now outfitted with two computers, and children's furniture, thanks to the community group Parent Power, founded by School Reform Commissioner Sylvia Simms.
"This is going to be a room for the students, the parents, the families and the community and the teachers," said Simms.
Simms' daughter, LaSkeetia Simms is the program director.
"We want to be able to bring parents in, to do math and literacy workshops where they can go home and take it to their children."
The center was funded with Parent Power grants obtained through Simms' sister, Quibila Divine.
"It's not just about being in your child's school. It's also about doing what you need to do to improve your community as well," said Divine.
Parent Power has opened similar centers at Dobbins High and Blaine Elementary schools.
