Pair of Eagles' Head Injuries Shine Light on Concussions
Eagles linebacker Stewart Bradley was knocked out, tried to get up, then fell to the turf before being helped from the field. Quarterback Kevin Kolb also suffered a head injury. Yet both players were allowed back on the field, before being taken out of the game.
KYW's Medical Editor Dr. Brian McDonough reports there was no doubt the Eagles made the right decision removing both Kevin kolb and Stewart Bradley from the game. But did they do it quickly enough?
The National Football League has rules that players may not retun to action if they have suffered concussion-like symptoms. Clearly both players did, in particular Bradley, who fell to the ground after an attempt to get up.
The reason these rules are in place is because there is both short term and long term risk.
The short-term risk is dramatic. It could lead to death with a repeated injury to the brain in a short period of time after a concussion.
The long-term problems include depression, and even Alzheimers-like symptoms.
