BENSALEM, Pa. (CBS) -- Police in Bensalem, Bucks County, say a drug bust has taken more than ten million dollars worth of narcotics off the streets of the Philadelphia area.
Police conducting a surveillance detail near State Road and American Drive on Sunday night saw a suspicious vehicle and decided to investigate. They say two men drove off in the tractor-trailer with California registration plates, which was later stopped for a traffic violation.
Inside the truck, according to Bensalem public safety director Fred Harran, was 15 kilos of heroin and 20 pounds of methamphetamine with a street value of over $10 million.
"We probably stopped a good load of drugs that were heading to the Delaware Valley," he says. "They were heading probably to this region, to the five-county area, for distribution: broken down and sold on the streets."
Taken into custody were Esteban Velasco and Juan Nolasco, both of California. They were being held in lieu of $1 million bail each.
Harran says there's huge demand for heroin on the streets, and he believes his officers may have saved a lot of lives.
