Pair Charged In Botched Robbery At Atlantic City Casino
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) -- Two people were arrested after an elderly Pennsylvania man was pistol-whipped during a botched robbery at an Atlantic City casino.
Thirty-four-year-old Maurice Medlin of New York faces numerous charges, including burglary, conspiracy, weapons offenses and two counts of aggravated assault following the assault at 9 a.m. Thursday on the 11th floor of the Tropicana Casino and Resort.
Authorities said the victim and his wife—whose names were not released—were leaving their room when they were confronted by Medlin and 31-year-old Cynthia
Walker of Atlantic City, and forced back into their room. But the wife ran to the 10th floor to seek help, and the assailants fled empty-handed.
A casino security officer then grabbed Walker on a stairwell, but Medlin ran off and went back to his room on the 21st floor and barricaded himself inside, authorities said. Authorities negotiated with him for about 90 minutes after he refused to open the door. When Medlin opened the door a crack, a SWAT team forced its way in and arrested him.
The man who was pistol-whipped sustained bruises but no serious injuries. He declined to go to the hospital.
Medlin and Walker, who was charges with conspiracy, were being held at the Atlantic County Jail. It was not immediately known if either one had retained a lawyer.
