Pa. Turnpike To Raise Speed Limit To 70 mph On 100-Mile Stretch Next Week

HARRISBURG, Pa., (CBS) -- The Pennsylvania Turnpike has announced that it will raise the speed limit to 70 miles an hour on most of a 100-mile stretch of the turnpike's main line in the east-central part of the state this coming Wednesday.
Throughout the day on Wednesday, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission will gradually unveil signs posting a 70 mile an hour speed limit on most sections of the road between Morgantown in Berks County to the Blue Mountain Interchange in Cumberland County.
Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo says it amounts to a pilot project now that state law has been changed to allow for the higher speed limit.
"You know, we're going to take a look at this section, and see what the facts and figures pan out to be. If everything goes smoothly on this, then we would probably increase other parts of the toll road possibly sometime next year," DeFebo said.
DeFebo says the 100-mile length of turnpike where the speed limit will be raised Wednesday was chosen in part because it has many long straight stretches. But he warns there will be curves along that 100-mile length where lower speed limits will be posted.
