Pa. Turnpike Relocating Maintenance Facility, Making More Room For Mall

NORRISTOWN, Pa. (CBS) -- Drivers getting on the Pennsylvania Turnpike at the Norristown interchange may be wondering what that construction near the toll plaza is all about.
Work is underway on a $14-million project to relocate the turnpike's Plymouth Meeting maintenance facility to the eastbound side of the toll road.

Currently, that facility sits on the westbound side of the turnpike.
The project calls for construction of three new structures including a maintenance building, equipment storage, and a salt shed.
"Once the contractor is finished building the new facility, they will demolish the property on the westbound side, and at this time I think we are going to be leasing the property to the owner of the Plymouth Meeting Mall," says turnpike spokeswoman Mimi Doyle.
There was no immediate word on what the mall's plans are for the property.
Doyle says the project also includes an access road on the westbound side of the road to get emergency vehicles and plows out there more quickly.
The project should be finished in about a year.
