PA Turnpike Improvements To Be Made In Wake Of January Snowstorm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A January snowstorm stranded more than 500 vehicles on the Pennsylvania Turnpike for hours, and now a review team is recommending improvements.
The After-Action Review was written by a team of staff and consultants suggesting the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission make 22 improvements to deal with such emergencies in the future. Commission spokesman Carl DeFebo says the work will begin soon.
"These are things that will be implemented. Some of these will be implemented within the next few months, hopefully before next winter, some are mid-term and longer term projects," said Commission spokesman Carl DeFebo, who says the work will begin soon.
The list includes evaluating access ramps, gates, and median barriers to manage traffic during an incident, storing emergency rations for stuck motorists, strengthening weather forecasting and technologies, and improving communication with the National Guard through joint training.
