Pa. House Republicans Still Tweaking Their Rival Plan For Statewide Property Tax Relief
By Tony Romeo
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- The chairman of the Finance Committee of the Pennsylvania House says his panel could vote as soon as next week on a Republican alternative to Governor Wolf's school property tax relief proposal.
That alternative proposal was rolled out before the committee today.
Stan Saylor (R-York County) told the committee that the GOP property tax relief plan, like Gov. Wolf's plan, would reduce but not eliminate school property taxes in Pennsylvania.
"I know there's a lot of members who want to see complete elimination -- they'd like that now," he said. "But we know, and we've seen the votes, and they're just not there, we don't believe."
The GOP property tax relief plan would call for the same increase in the personal income tax rate proposed by the governor. But unlike Wolf's plan, instead of eliminating many current exemptions to the sales tax, it would call for a bigger increase in the sales tax rate. It would also change the formula for allocating property tax relief.
And in Philadelphia, unlike Wolf's plan, there would be only property tax relief, not wage tax relief -- although Saylor says that could be changed.
